Environmental Impact Project
We use all sorts of chemicals on a daily basis: pesticides/herbicides, plastics, cleaners, pharmaceuticals, food additives, etc. But what are the short-term and long-term implications of these chemicals on the health of us and the environment? Your students get a chance to investigate these.
Working individually, be sure to include the following:
Like the Organic Compounds Project, students will be able to select their preferred method of presenting the researched information. However, as there is no oral presentation component of this assignment, students can select additional presentation methods, such as a song, puppet show, Powtoon, etc. Again, the teacher will have to approve any requested student presentation methods.
Part way through the assignment, students will conference with the teacher to demonstrate what they have already completed to receive descriptive feedback and improve on their project as needed. Here is the grading rubric:

- Identity of your chemical (what class of organic compound is it?)
- General properties (physical, chemical)
- General formula
- How is the chemical used?
- What are some possible environmental impacts?
- What are some possible human health impacts?
- What are some methods of clean-up?
- How can we reduce the use of the chemical? Is there anything that can replace it with similar effectiveness?
- If nothing currently exists, propose a possible solution for clean-up and something which could replace it
